Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has. (Margaret Mead)
What do you want Gloversville to look like in 2020? That was the question we asked ourselves at the first meeting of Gloversville2020. Check our answers against yours.
- We want a vibrant small city with busy sidewalks, prosperous stores, restaurants and cafes. We want people to come downtown to visit these establishments, our beautiful Library, a thriving Glove Theatre or simply to stroll through the city, meet friends and have a pleasant place to sit for a visit.
- We want a welcoming, pedestrian-friendly environment.
- We want new businesses to choose Gloversville – but we don't want big-box stores or parking lots lining our streets and making it dangerous to walk. We don’t think that is necessary for the revitalization of our city – in fact, we think it would hurt.
- In our vision, Gloversville in 2020 is a bustling small city that has retained its charm; new construction gracefully fitting in with the old.
What's HAPPENING RIGHT NOW?
Farmer's Market: Last year the Gloversville Farmer’s Market had a great year in its new home on Elm Street. This year is going to be even better – larger space with more local farmers and producers. When you shop at a Farmer’s Market you're getting the best ‘bang for your buck” - the freshest, best tasting and most nutritious food AND you're supporting your local economy.
Gloversville Farmer's Market is open every Saturday morning from 8am to 12pm. There'll be music and entertainment most weeks so make it a regular part of your week.
Mohawk Harvest: The Co-op is doing GREAT! Shoppers have been coming in from all around our area - including summer people from the lakes. All expressed their pleasure at having the Co-op here and at the wonderful products and produce (local and delicious) available. We urge you all to support the Co-op by shopping there. You do not have to be a member to shop and you'll find a great array of products. Visit their webiste for information about joining and check their "What's in the Store" often for new products being featured.
Glove Performing Arts Center: This is another success-story-in-the-making. The folks at the Glove (GPAC) have kept the Glove busy all Summer. It will continue through the Fall and Winter. Attached is a schedule through the beginning of January 2010 when the Glove will present the play "Picnic". Again, we urge to support the Glove by attending these performances - there is something here for EVERYONE!
Gloversville Library. The Gloversville Public Library is undergoing a lobby restoration (open through the restoration). Built in 1904 with a grant from Andrew Carnegie, the Library is on the National Registry of Historic Places. It has everything you would expect in a full-service library PLUS a Historical Reference Room with over 1,000 volumes dedicated to the history of the area.
Summer Activities: The Summer was great in Gloversville. We hope you have been able to take part in the many activites and look forward to seeing everyone in the Fall & Winter.
If you agree that Gloversville and the life you've made here is worth the effort, you've come to the right place. This website was created to bring the community of concerned citizens together - Steps to 2020 has information about the steps we taking right now and plans that Gloversville2020 has for future projects; check the Calendar often for what's happening in Gloversville; and don't forget the Links page which will take you to other web pages that will be of interest. Come back often to see what’s new.
